Analysis of the match between Manchester United and Brighton
Manchester United’s board decided to terminate Ruben Amorim’s contract following last weekend’s draw against Leeds. That result marked the second consecutive draw for the Red Devils against teams in the lower half of the table, after a disappointing stalemate with Wolves. With no long-term successor in place, youth team coach Darren Fletcher was appointed as interim manager. However, in his first match in charge of the senior side, the Scottish coach could only guide United to a draw against Burnley, a struggling team currently sitting second from bottom in the standings.
At present, United are in talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick—two former Old Trafford favorites—regarding a potential return as interim head coach until the end of the season, while the club continues its search for a permanent appointment. The FA Cup represents the only remaining competition for Manchester United this season, after missing out on European qualification and suffering an early exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of Grimsby. Aware of the importance of the tie, Fletcher is expected to field his strongest possible lineup as United look to find a solution against Brighton in the third round of the FA Cup.
In terms of head-to-head record, Brighton beat United twice last season and have won three consecutive away matches at Old Trafford. However, in the first Premier League meeting this campaign, the Red Devils exacted some revenge with an emphatic 4-2 victory. That result may provide a boost in confidence, but with Brighton currently on a three-match unbeaten run—most recently drawing with Manchester City midweek—Fletcher’s United are likely to face a stern test and may struggle to secure a win within 90 minutes.
